Welcome Brij!

Hello everyone! My name is Brij, and I am from Azamgarh (U.P.), India. I completed my bachelor’s degree from the University of Delhi and pursued my master’s in chemistry from IIT Kanpur. During my master’s program, I worked on synthesizing organometallic complexes and their application in Suzuki coupling.

Recently, I started my PhD under the supervision of Associate Professor Mali Husby Rosnes. My research work aims to combine organometallic complexes with Polyoxometalates to create a highly recyclable catalyst for sustainable copolymerization of CO₂ and epoxide. The significance of this work motivated me to join the Rosnes group and I couldn’t be more excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.

Welcome Iris!

Hello everyone!

My name is Iris, and I just started my PhD in the molecular design group at the chemistry department. I grew up in the very northern part of Italy and just moved here to Bergen. My academic journey started with a bachelor’s in pharmacy at the University of Innsbruck, in Austria. As for my master’s I studied drug discovery and development at the University of Vienna. There I found my passion for computer aided drug discovery and development, which has led me to the current project. Here, at UiB under the supervision of Prof. Jensen I will focus on de-novo drug design for the discovery of novel potential hit-compounds against challenging targets as part of an interdisciplinary, collaborative project.

Welcome Lars!

Hello everyone!

My name is Lars, and I recently started my PhD in the marine natural products group led by Associate professor Monica Jordheim. I’m originally from a small town in Ryfylke called Jørpeland but moved to Bergen in 2015 to study chemistry. After my master’s degree I spent a couple of years working as a head engineer at the Marine research institute, but now I’m excited to be back at UoB as a PhD candidate.

I also did my master’s in the same research group, where I worked on bioprospecting metabolites from a deep-sea sponge. But this time around my research will be focused on the extraction and characterization of polyphenols from brown macroalgae.

Welcome Gunnhild!

Hello everyone! My name is Gunnhild and I have just started my PhD in the Chemical Medical Technology group under the supervision of John Georg Seland. For the last four years I have worked as a medical physicist with MRI scanners at Oslo University Hospital. MR technology fascinated me during my bachelor’s in physics at UiB, so when it was time for me to choose a subject for my master’s, the decision fell on MR spectroscopy. I am so happy that I now get to continue working with spectroscopy for my PhD, and I look forward to getting to know all of you better as well!

Welcome Florian!

I’m Florian, a French bioinformatician who recently graduated from a master’s program at Nantes Université. I began my research journey with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry in Université Laval, Canada. During this I had the opportunity of internships in the molecular biology and synthetic biology domains, as well as student implication in an international scientific competition. After seeing what kind of information simulations could bring, I decided to get into structural bioinformatics. Due to my interest in the new wave of solutions being developed using AI, I am now part of Prof. Reuter’s lab as part of a collaborative project to characterize proteins that intermittently bind to the membrane with machine and deep learning tools. I look forward to sharing this journey with all of you.

Frida returns to research, on 80%

From November 1st, Frida will spend 80% of her time as a researcher in the Haug group. The researcher position is affiliated with the 180N Norwegian Nuclear Medicine Consortium funded through the Trond Mohn Foundation. Frida will be part of the Tracer Development Center within the consortium and will work on new methods for 18F radiolabeling of organosilanes and functionalization of bioactive compounds with chelator moieties for introduction of radiometals. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the LeRoux group and the PET centre at Haukeland University Hospital.

Welcome to Bergen, Zaw!

Hello, everyone.

I am Zaw Min Thu from Myanmar. I earned my PhD degree from Mandalay University, Myanmar in 2016. I studied my doctorate mobility, as a part of my PhD program, at University of Pavia, Italy in 2013 and did my post-doctoral study at Ningxia Organic Synthesis and Engineering Technology, Ningxia Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, PR China in 2019. During my PhD and post-doctoral career, I have been working on Natural Product Chemistry and monobactam antibiotics synthesis. I will be working as a researcher in Professor Torgils Fossen´s research group with a passion for the isolation and structure determination of bioactive natural products from selected plant sources with a particular focus on aromatic compounds. I am excited to start a new chapter in my life, working with you and living in such a beautiful city, Bergen.

New assoc. prof. in town – Camilla!

Hi everyone!

I’m back! And I’m ready to embark on my new position as associate professor here at the Department of Chemistry. I know quite many of my wonderful colleagues from before, but since I also discover a lot of new faces, a proper introduction is in order.

I am originally from Stavanger, and growing up in Stavanger is quite similar to growing up in Bergen, except less mountain tops, a lot more wind and a little less rain. I am of stereotypical Norwegian-outdoors-people heritage, and I am doing my very best passing on the legacy to my offspring. This means you may stumble across me/us on one of Bergen’s Mountain tops or paths on the weekends, preferably wearing skis in the winter season. I have an English Setter named Kita, I’m a food enthusiast and I grow apples on trees in flowerpots on the porch of my family’s miniature house.

In 2007 I moved to Bergen to study chemistry, finishing up with a PhD in chemistry approximately 10 years later. My field of focus is thermochemical conversion of waste biomass (wood/lignin, sewage sludge, food waste etc.), which tends to be unpredictable and nasty business, but by combining targeted industrial approaches with academic pathways for qualitative and quantitative revelations, valuable biorefinery concepts and creations have emerged. Being a biomass advocate, I have been part of a wide array of projects involving valorization of biomass into energy carriers and renewable platform chemicals, both as PhD-student, postdoctoral fellow and researcher. During my postdoc I also dove into sustainability analyses, leading to my most recent position as senior researcher on integrating life cycle assessment as part of research and scientific development.

I look forward to this new chapter with the department, to teach and to generate new and creative research projects and collaborations.
